Health Insurance and Medical Care

Information about health insurance required and medical care for foreign students.

All foreign students coming to study at Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra are legally obliged to have a health insurance valid for the territory of Slovak Republic and for the whole period of their stay. Without prove of such insurance student cannot be registered at SUA in Nitra.


Students from EU countries


EU/EEA and Swiss citizens are entitled to health care under the same conditions as the Slovak citizens. They have to present European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) to the health care provider. The necessary treatment will be covered by Slovak Health insurance company according to tariffs for Slovak citizens, provided that the health care provider has a valid contract with at least one health insurance company. The European Health Insurance Card cannot be used for private sector health care providers. For more information about EHIC click here.



Students from Non EU countries


Students from Non EU countires are required to obtain health insurance in Slovakia. Confirmation of health insurance valid for the territory of Slovak Republic and for the whole period of your stay is to be submitted to the Immigration Police Office within 30 days upon your arrival to Slovakia or upon granting the Temporary Residence Permit (see Visa and Residence permit for more details).

The International Relations Office will assist you with obtaining the Health insurance for foreigners. The approximate costs per day is 1,40 EUR.


The Health insurance for foreigners generally covers cost of health care and/or urgent health care provided to foreigners on the territory of Slovak Republic such as:
  • ambulatory health care
  • general practitioner for children, youth and adults
  • gynaecologist
  • other specialists
  • hospital health care
  • doctor’s first aid and emergency health treatment
  • covering costs of prescription drugs and medical aids
  • special care of expectant mothers and newborn children
  • urgent dental care
  • preventive health checks and rehabilitation programs (to the same extent as Slovak citizens covered by public health care insurance)

up to approx. 33 000 EUR, in case of Pregnancy insurance up to approx. 16 500 EUR.

The scope of insurance depends on the agreed type of insurance. The type of insurance and the sum insured are specified in the individual insurance contract.


Medical Care

There are state and private health care providers in Slovakia.

In case of health problems you need to visit a general practitioner (GP) first, who provides the basic health care and refers you to the appropriate specialist for further medical examination. Contact the International relations office to make an appointment for you.

There are also medical centers with general practitioners, specialists and dentist in the town:

  • Medical Center Chrenova, Fatranska street 2, Nitra
  • Medical Center Klokočina, Hviezdoslavova street 1, Nitra
  • Dental Policlinics Parovce, Koceľova street 29, Nitra
  • General Hospital in Nitra, Špitálska street 6, Nitra


EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICE

Outside regular working hours of GP`s and specialists (during the night and weekends) necessary health care is provided by the Emergency medical service located in Nitra General Hospital, Špitálska street 6.

Working hours:

16:00 - 7:00 on weekdays

24 hours on weekends


FIRST AID SERVICE

In case of accidents, emergencies and other serious health problems call First Aid Service 112 or 155 or go to the Central Reception (Centralny prijem) of a hospital.
